King (manek): Manek Yunus Bessi (2005) is nominal Raja of Lelain, one of the 19 principalities of Rote. He is also a minister of protestant church locally and Lelain is only area not on the seaside. Is former part of Bokai principality. Later the people of Lelain moved to Baä in N.-Rote.


History of the kingdom of Lelain

The Lelain Kingdom is one of the 19 kingdoms on Rote Island.
Rote was formerly known as “Lolo Neo Do Tenu Hatu” some called it “Nes Do Male” or “Lino Do Nes” which means a deserted and uninhabited island. The name or designation of Rote originated from the arrival of Portuguese traders and missionary activities in Indonesia from 1512 to 1605.
Before Lelain became a separate kingdom on his own in 1690, Lelain broke away from Bokai.

Rote Island is an island of Indonesia, part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of the Lesser Sunda Islands. According to legend, this island got its name accidentally when a lost Portuguese sailor arrived and asked a farmer where he was. The surprised farmer, who could not speak Portuguese, introduced himself, “Rote”.
The Rote tribe is one of the original inhabitants of Rote Island, some of whom are also settled on Timor Island. 19th century

– 1818-1819: The people of Hoi Ledo were banished to Babau (Kupang) because they wanted to separate from Termanu

– 1874: Manek Thie, FoE Mbura, is killed in the Nusak Termanu area. Due to Nusak Termanu’s competition to gain influence over the Netherlands. King Termanu was then dismissed from his position and then replaced by his younger brother.

– 1879: Rote Island becomes a Onder-Afdeling.
