General

The Binamu Kingdom is one of the kingdoms that was founded in Jeneponto Regency in the early 17th century. The kingdom of Binamu community is from the Makassar Tribe. This kingdom is one of the small kingdoms that initially sided with the Kingdom of Gowa and then switched to the Kingdom of Bone. The Binamu Kingdom ruled in the eastern part of Jeneponto Regency. The people worked as rice farmers and fishermen. The Binamu Kingdom divided its government into groups called palili and wanua. This kingdom became a customary kingdom in the early 20th century.

Founding

The Binamu Kingdom was originally a small territory called Kareang and the ruler had the title Kare. Kareang-kareang were Kareang Layu in Layu, Kareang Kalomporo in Tana Toa, Kareang Tina’ro in Tina’ro, Kareang Balang in Balang, Kareang Manjangloe in Manjangloe, Kareang Ballarompo in Ballarompo, and Kareang Tolo in Tolo. These areas later became subordinate to the Kingdom of Gowa. In 1600 AD, all of these regions were united into a country called Turatea and broke away from the power of the king of the Kingdom of Gowa. The government in the land of Turatea was rearranged, so that small kingdoms were established in the Jeneponto area with the territories and their first kings being the Kare who controlled the Kareang region. The Binamu Kingdom was finally formed by Kareang Layu.

Government

The Binamu Kingdom divided the government into groups called palili and wanua. Palili is an area ruled by the king’s subordinates, while Wanua is ruled directly by the king. The palili regions were Sidenre, Balang, Balang Toa, Sapanang, Cinnong, and Tonrokassi. Wanua area included Ujung Loé, Kalumpang, Palajau, Bulo-Bulo, Pattallasang, Jombé, Paitana, Arungkeke, Togo-togo, Bontorappo, Pao, Tarowang, Tino, Tonra, Rumbia, and Tolo ‘.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Binamu Kingdom became a traditional kingdom led by a king..
