History of the sultanate of Serdang

The Sultanate of Serdang was established in 1723 and joined the Republic of Indonesia in 1946. The Sultanate was separated from the Deli kingdom after succession disputes in 1720. Like the other kingdoms on the east coast of Sumatra, Serdang became prosperous because of tobacco, rubber, and palm oil plantations.

Serdang army was defeated by the Dutch East Indies in 1865. Under an agreement signed in 1907, Serdang recognized the sovereignty of the Netherlands, and was not entitled to conduct foreign relations with other countries. Because of a social revolution in East Sumatra in 1946, the Sultan of Serdang then handed power to the forces of the Republic.
